Review of polling districts and polling places 2023

What you need to know

In preparation for the UK Parliamentary election we have a duty to:

  • divide the borough area into polling districts
  • designate a polling place for each district

The arrangements made for parliamentary elections are also used at other elections. This is why we must keep these arrangements under review. We are currently reviewing our polling districts and polling places. We want to hear your feedback on places that you think could be used as polling places and comments on proposed polling districts.

The review will be in place in time for the elections on 2 May 2024.

Our review is focusing on polling places rather than polling stations.

What are polling districts, places and stations?

  • Polling districts are geographical electoral areas into which wards, and communities, may be sub-divided. In parishes each parish or parish ward should consist of whole polling districts.
  • Polling places are the buildings or areas designated by the council where voters in a polling district go to vote in person.
  • Polling stations is the area within the polling place that voters are issued their ballot papers.

Why the review process?

The main aim of the review and proposals is to:

  • try and identify new polling places in areas where the existing provision is unsuitable or unavailable
  • consider, as appropriate, feedback received from recent elections raised by members of the public, elected members and other stakeholders
  • ensure, as far as practicable, that any new polling places are accessible to people with disabilities
  • ensure that all electors have reasonable facilities for voting
  • try to minimise disruption to schools

An Electoral Registration Officer must amend the electoral register. This is to reflect any change in a polling district. These changes will show on the re-publication of the electoral register on 1 February 2024.

All changes must be passed by us. This is why we need to carry out the review ahead of the Council meeting in December 2023.
