Public toilet consultation

What we consulted on

We have 16 public toilets in Guildford, 10 in the GU1 postcode area. We want to ensure our public toilet facilities run in the best possible way for the future. We proposed to close four or five public toilets. Closing these toilets will avoid future large refurbishment costs. It will save about £51,000 a year. It will also allow a vacant toilet cleaner role to become redundant.

The four or five toilets that we proposed to close were chosen from the following:

  • Allen House Grounds (York Road Car Park)
  • Bedford Road (Car Park)
  • Farnham Road (Car Park)
  • Onslow Recreation Ground
  • Ripley
  • Tunsgate
  • Ward Street
  • Woodbridge Road

Why we consulted with you

We have no legal duty to provide public toilets. We try to balance the needs of the community with our aim of providing more efficient services. It is important that we review our facilities. A review makes sure they are operated effectively and efficiently for the future.

The responses you give will help us to make an informed decision when choosing which toilets to close. We would prefer to pass the toilets over to a different organisation, rather than close them.

We asked local people to comment on our proposals and on which four or five toilets should close.

Decision

Following the consultation it was decided that the following locations would be closed:

  • Allen House
  • Bedford Road
  • Farnham Road
  • Ripley

We have come to an agreement with Ripley Parish Council. They will will take on the cleaning and maintenance of Ripley toilets from Monday 4 April. This means the toilets will stay open. We would like to thank Ripley Parish Council for their swift decision at an Extra-Ordinary Council meeting last week.

The last day the other three toilets will be open is Sunday 3 April. They will not be available for use on and after Monday 4 April 2022. We are working hard to determine if another organisation would like to take over the toilets. Work to encourage businesses to allow the public to use their customer toilets, without the need to be a customer and make a purchase, will continue.
